Blizzard Beatdown Recap

We had a great weekend. My recollection will no doubt be off on a few things so those in attendance please feel free to correct or add.

First, thanks to our support team cheering us on: Steph, Anne, Tracy, Jaymee, Charlotte, Kevin’s girlfriend Kaitlyn, Marshall’s girlfriend Andrea and her daughter Riley. These were very long days for them and they kept cheering us on from up in the “nest” (the back of the bleachers) … of course special mention goes out to Steph who is due in the not too distant future and kept smiling all the way through the weekend.

The organizers put on a great show and despite some delays on Day 1 and some difficulties with hanging the rings on Day 2, this was a top notch event.

We had a great team of Hannah Ives (Teens), Cheryl Paynter (Masters Women), Kelly Miles (Scaled Women), Rob Lantz, Marshall Thomson & Mike Ives (Masters Men), Mike Chaloner (Scaled Mens), Kevin Douiliette & Steven Bishop (Rx Men).

Team CrossFit PEI

Five workouts were announced in advance scaled differently for each division. The finals for the top 8 in each division were kept a secret. The scoring for each workout was as follows:

1st – 100 points
2nd – 95 points
3rd – 90 points
4th – 85 points
5th – 80 points
6th – 75 points
7th – 73 points
8th – 71 points
9th – 69 points
10th – 67 points
11th etc. – decrementing 2 points each position from here.

In workouts with a time cap, people who didn’t finish in time received an additional 1 second for each rep that was not completed.

Here are the workouts with some highlights. Feel free to add your own to comments.

DAY 1

WOD 1 – 3 rounds: 50′ Walking Lunges, 20 Box Jumps, 15 Wall Balls, 10 HR Push Ups / HSPU’s

10:00 Time Cap (Full workout here).

The first workout was difficult … despite a big scare two weeks ago when Mike thought he re-injured his leg when trying the workout back at the gym he took the box jumps slow with perfect technique and paced to a very solid finish in the middle of the scaled mens heat. Coolest moment was the subtle “Yes” fist clinch gesture Mike C made as he finished the last of the box jumps.

Funniest moment was Bish and Kevin almost head butting each other since their boxes were butted up against each other. There were a few narrow misses / tender moments but no injuries or anything worth gossiping about ;)

Rob, Marshall and Mike I finished in the top 10 in Masters as did Mike C in Scaled Men. Bish and Kevin were in a very tough division on this one and finished a little lower as I recall. Kelly and Hannah did really well on this too. Cheryl struggled a little with some missed reps but it turned out she was just getting ready to crush the rest of the workouts.

Written by Cheryl:

Mike I set the tone early on with this workout, winning his heat decididly
and didnt look any worse for wear afterwards. Little did his competitors
know, he was just warming up.

Cheryl struggled on this workout, both trying out weary and questionable
legs and not having alot of luck on the push up component. Middle of the
pack finish.

WOD 2a – 500m / 750m Row, 15 Hang Cleans, 20 KB Swings, 50 Double Unders, 20 KB Swings, 15 Hang Cleans, 500m / 750m Row

15:00 Time Cap (Full workout here)

This workout sucked … grip just fell apart and the three minutes following it flew by so fast. The Rx men had 155 lbs on the bar which was hard enough to pull but destroyed the grip for double unders. Kevin did a great job and finished the last of the second set of Hang Cleans before the time ran out.

Hannah did a great job completing this in the time limit despite having some issues with the Double Unders. It was very cool to see the Rx Women’s competitors coming over and cheering her on as she pushed through that workout.

WOD 2b – within 3 minutes of completing 2b you had to establish a 1RM Clean and Jerk

Bish hitting 265 after a crushing 15:00 workout (courtesy of Rob Lantz).

Kelly had a plan and stuck to it for 2a and then after that came in and matched her PR  … very cool. Marshall hit a very solid 165, with Mike I, Rob and Kevin all hitting 185 lbs. Mike C made 195 look easy.

For Masters women, there was not enough of the right kind of weight so they did as many reps as possible of 65 lb clean and jerk within the 15:00 minute time cap for 2a. So Cheryl crushes out the row (taking second place over all in just over 9:00 and then got 37 clean and jerks … was extremely cool to watch).

Bish won this event with a 265 lb Clean and Jerk after a brutal workout in 2a. The whole place was on their feet screaming as he did this without his O-Lifting shoes in a pair of Nanos!

At the end of Day 1, Cheryl moved up to 3rd place in her division, Rob moved up 10 points to 4th place, Marshall was 6th (I believe) and Mike I slipped back to 2nd 20 points out of first place in Masters. Bish was 6th in Rx Mens. Kelly and Mike C were both moving up.

DAY 2

WOD 3 – Snatch Ladder (Full workout here)

The women opened the day with the Snatch Ladder and put on a show. Kelly PR’d and Cheryl placed second (I think) just missing 105.

The Masters Men and Scaled Men followed with Marshall getting a 25 lb PR! Rob, Mike I failed at 165 lbs and got 9 deadlifts. Mike C and Kevin both PR’d in their lifts!

Bish stayed consistent all the way through starting with the squat snatch at 115 making it look easy all the way up to an incredible 235 lbs for first place.

The fight to be in the top 8 for Finals was on! Cheryl was in third, Kelly was in 10th in the biggest division, Scaled Women, Marshall was in 12th, Rob was 4th, Mike I was 2nd, Bish moved up to 4th place.

WOD 4 – 7:00 AMRAP of 7 Deadlifts, Sprint (across gym), 14 Air Squats / Pistols, 21 Double Unders, Sprint (Full workout here)

You can do anything for 7 minutes … although it doesn’t make it suck any less. Constant movement and a quick set up of the Double Unders were key in this workout.

The Rx competitors had a particularly spicy version of this workout doing pistols (one leg squats). Kevin had never been able to do them before but slayed a big dragon on this workout by doing almost 60 of them as prescribed.

At this point, we had five people in the finals: Cheryl, Rob, Mike I, Mike C and Bish.

THE FINALS

This was pretty cool. There was a different set of workouts for the men and women in every division

Teens

Final 1 – 2:00 Row for Max Calories
Final 2 – 2:00 AMRAP of 15 Straight Leg Sit Ups, 5 Burpee Box Jumps

Hannah rowed the best I’ve ever seen and even though she missed about 10 strokes when the display turned off just before she started she cranked out 26 calories. She did really well with the straight leg sit ups with her flexibility from Taekwondo helping her.

Masters Women

Final 1 – 4:00 Time Cap 3 Rounds of Row 10 Calories, 12 Power Cleans, 8 Front Squats
Final 2 – 4:00 Time Cap 3 Rounds of ?, 10 Toes to Rings, 10 Thrusters

Cheryl crushed the first workout winning it and solidifying her place in the the top 3. The Toes

Masters Men

Final 1 – 4:00 Time Cap 4 Rounds of 10 Ground to Overhead (95 lbs), 10 Back Squats, Row 10 Cals
Final 2 – 4:00 Time Cap 4 Rounds of 6 Burpee Over the Box Jumps, 6 Ring Dips, 6 Thrusters

Written by Cheryl:

So here is where Mike I really came to life, the first place contender was
slowing and Mike was picking up speed. Between the workouts Mike looked
fresh as a daisy as he casually jogged to keep loose while others were bent
over trying to catch their breath. Mike sensed an opportunity to
capitalize and absolutely crushed the last WOD and was the only competitor
on the floor jumping over the box. Well worth the push, he tied for first
place overall. Quite an inspiration to watch a competitor at work.

Scaled Men

Final 1 – 10 Cal Row, 8 Push Press at 115, 6 Sit Up Get Ups
Final 2 – 10 Power Cleans (115), 5 Front Squats (115), 10 Bar Facing Burpees

Mike C kept an amazing pace up on this workout and passed a number of the other competitors. He made the Get Ups look easy but that makes sense since nothing can keep Mike C down.

Rx Men

Final 1 – 2:00 Time Cap AMRAP Ground to Overhead with 135 lbs
Final 2 – 3:00 Time Cap 3 Ring Dips, 3 Wall Walks
Final 3 – 4:00 Time Cap 1 Deadlift/Hang Clean/Jerk with 185 lbs, 3 Back Squats, 1 Sprint, 25 Double Unders

Bish got 27 reps in the first WOD which would have been a new PR for him in Isabel (30 snatches for time) had he kept going.

The second Final looked brutal … Bish made the ring dips look easy but the wall walks (start in a push up feet against the wall and walk up the wall to a handstand until your chest touches the wall) were difficulty.

Bish made the third workout in the Final look easy, passing a bunch of the other competitors.

Results

The organizers said that they would be posting detailed results later but at the end of the day, we had two people hit the podium. Cheryl took third place in the Master’s Women and Mike I tied for first place in Master’s men.

Congratulations to everyone on the team. It was a great time.
